Jointly sponsored by USAID and UNIFEM
Pacific, the Gender Equality in Leadership (GEL) project was created to address the need for civic
education in
the Marshall Islands. This project was designed to
provide basic civic education and gender sensitization in the lead-up to
the November 2007 national
elections. Under the Gender Equality in
the Leadership (GEL) project, WUTMI conducted a national voter survey to
measure voter knowledge, behavior and attitudes, particularly towards
women leaders (Voter Survey Report). The results of the survey were used
to inform the civic education component of the project.
Our last national conference, held in
April 2007, served as a training for voter educators from every atoll in
the RMI. One man and one woman representative from each atoll
attended the conference to receive training on topics such as human
rights, the Marshallese democratic and electoral systems, women in
politics, and good governance.

GEL project is focused on
carrying out a media campaign and working to achieve a gender-sensitive civics
curriculums for all grades. Local mentors are also visiting the
outer islands to support the trained voter educators in conducting civic
education workshops in their home communities.
