Sponsored by AusAID, the POWEHR Project (Protection of Women-Enhancing Human Rights) aims to spread awareness on the issue of violence against women (VAW). POWEHR is a continuation of  the 2003 WAVE (Women Against Violence through Education) project, WUTMI's first project in this area. The WAVE project conducted a community survey that revealed that 87% of Marshallese women have been victims of physical violence. The WAVE project also produced an awareness DVD about violence against women in Marshallese culture, entitled Ekakwikwi Jinen Emmaan (A Call to Arms).  This DVD has proved to be a very effective tool in spreading awareness and generating discussion about VAW in the Marshall Islands.

Under the POWEHR project, WUTMI has recently completed a set of legislative recommendations designed to enhance legal protection of women.  WUTMI is also working to create a network of community partners who can provide resources and services for VAW victims, with the ultimate goal of establishing a safe house for abused women.
