WUTMI is currently carrying out
several projects with varying activities but the common goal of
strengthening Marshallese women and their families. The
Parents as Teachers (PAT) project sends parent
educators into local homes to teach parents of young children the skills
they need to raise healthy and confident children. WUTMI is also
directing a project entitled Protection of
Women/Enhancing Human Rights (POWEHR) that focuses on spreading
awareness about domestic and sexual violence, as well as improving
current legislation and implementation.
WUTMI works to support environmental
initiatives as the land and surrounding waters of the Marshall Islands
form an integral part of our native culture. The
Sustainable Livelihood
Project promotes planting of indigenous trees that are traditionally
used for handicraft production, while also supporting outer island women
by helping them sell their handicrafts. The Turtle Project, entitled "Sea Turtle Genetic Sampling, Data
Collection, and Satellite Tagging Project in the Marshall Islands",
trains local women to collect genetic data of sea turtles in order to
track their movements.
To address the need for civic
education in the Marshall Islands, we are carrying out two projects.
The Gender Equality in the Leadership (GEL) project provides funding for
research on voter knowledge and behavior, a national conference to
sensitize voters to women leaders and discuss what basic civic
education
needs exist in the Marshall Islands, and the development of a media
campaign and gender-sensitive school curriculum. A complimentary UNIFEM
project sends mentors to all of the outer islands to conduct civic
education workshops, again with a focus on women in leadership.
