WUTMI
programs, projects and activities have evolved based on these
development areas. In 2002, the development of this Mission
Statement was not articulated through a series of value assessment
exercises, but it was drafted and circulated as working mission
statement at the general assembly in October of 2002 for
approval. It was designed as reflective of the purposes that were
used to develop the organization of WUTMI and to guide its
activities. At its Board Meeting in October,
2003, WUTMI reviewed its By-Laws and has begun to make changes that
would be further discussed in April 2004 for further approval in the
upcoming General Assembly in October of 2004.
The significance of this review, therefore, calls
for the assessment of WUTMI core values. This exercise will need to
involve more members of the WUTMI Board of
Directors. The
identification of core values for WUTMI will be drafted during the
upcoming Board Meeting. This draft will then lead toward the review and
possible revision of the Mission Statement of WUTMI.
Recently, the WUTMI officers, resource persons and
the staff have commenced the value assessment exercises, and thus far
have identified the following values as important for core operational
principles for WUTMI:
|
Guiding Core Values |
Functional Principles |
Programmatic Values |
|
Loyalty
Ethical Practice
Trust
Service
Respect
Democracy |
Accountability
Efficiency
Consistency
Accessibility
Knowledge
Competence
Cooperation
Equal Opportunity
Security |
Cultural Awareness
Family Support
Personal Development
Group Development
|
While
these values are categorized under the three headings, further
discussions and research might realign them under different headings. As stated earlier, the assessment exercise will
continue with more analysis to be provided by the participants.
After the identification of these values, the
staff proceeded with the second part of the exercise and translated some
of these values into action. The following are sample of some of the
responses:
Cultural Awareness –
-
Looks at ways to blend the culture with modern
lifestyles; encourages mothers to teach cultural awareness;
reaffirms the value of preserving the culture; collects folklores,
legends, chants and records to preserve the “old knowledge.”
-
Increases understanding and awareness about
traditions of true cultural/equity values; studies our origin, and
about how to use our local medicine.
-
Records all financial transaction on a
financial accounting program; and maintains accurate records and
books.
-
Conducts regular financial and functional
audits, and tracks use of funds carefully; and, takes responsibility
for shortfalls.
-
Publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep all
informed of activities undertaken.
Respect –
-
Develops individual résumé’s which will
provide a profile of each member, and that such profile will record
not only the member’s identify, clanship and education/work
background, but it will also include the member’s areas of
interests, hobbies, and so forth.
-
Holds workshops about the mission of the
organization and the important role a member plays in addressing the
mission.
-
Seeks membership opinion through evaluation of
what was learned, what needs to be improved, and so forth.
The
identification of WUTMI core values will help design a mission statement
that would form the basis for the existence and the growth of WUTMI.
The values will help shape the culture of WUTMI.
